Spikes Hang Tough, But Fall to ValleyCats, 4-3, on Thursday

TROY, N.Y. - The State College Spikes bounced back from two Tri-City ValleyCats home runs on Thursday night, but a sixth-inning error produced the go-ahead run as they dropped a 4-3 decision at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.

The Spikes (14-13) trailed 1-0 after Nate Perry hit his fourth home run of the year, a solo shot just inside the right field foul pole, off Adrian Mardueno in the first. In the fifth, State College went down 3-2 after A.J. Lee smashed a two-run homer to left for his second of the season off Jeremy Randolph.

However, State College recovered from both blasts. In the fourth, the Spikes loaded the bases with no outs and plated the tying run on a Luis Flores double-play ball. Four walks in the fifth, capped by Brylie Ware's free pass with the bases loaded, then gave State College the lead.

After Lee's long ball, David Vinsky manufactured another tying run in the sixth. A throwing error by Tri-City (11-14) third baseman Joe Perez after Vinsky's infield single sent him to third, with a passed ball then bringing him home.

The ValleyCats would take the lead for good, though, when C.J. Stubbs scored on Luis Flores's fielding error, one of three committed by the Spikes, in the sixth.

State College had an opportunity to tie the game in the ninth, as Andrew Warner led off the frame with a double down the left field line. However, Warner was thrown out at the plate by Tri-City center fielder Luis Guerrero trying to score on Dariel Gomez's single.

Ware and Vinsky each produced multi-hit games for the Spikes, while Pedro Pages collected three of the 12 walks taken by State College.

Jeremy Randolph (0-2) took the loss in relief despite none of the three of the runs he allowed over 3 2/3 innings being earned. Randolph yielded four hits and two walks while striking out five batters.

Tri-City reliever Franny Cobos (1-1) picked up the win in relief. Cobos gave up two runs, one of them earned, on one hit and four walks over 2 1/3 innings. The right-hander also notched two strikeouts. Garrett Gayle (1) earned the save with three scoreless innings in which he allowed three hits and a walk while striking out four batters.

The Spikes will now look to capture the last game of the three-game series with the ValleyCats on Friday night at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.

Right-hander Enmanuel Solano (1-3), who is second in the New York-Penn League with 28 2/3 innings pitched this season, gets the ball for State College in the 7:00 p.m. matchup. Tri-City will go with right-hander Kyle Serrano (0-1) on the mound.

Following the road trip, the Spikes return home for a big series at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park against the Staten Island Yankees (New York Yankees). The homestand begins with a Beanie Cap Giveaway presented by McClure Company to the first 500 fans on Autism Awareness Night at Saturday's 7:05 p.m. game.

Sunday, fans can look forward to the return of David "The Bullet" Smith as he brings his record-setting Human Cannonball act back to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, with a post-game blast-off after the 6:05 p.m. game. In addition, FIREWORKS presented by Penn State Health Medical Group will light up the skies after the contest.

Plus, it will be Military Appreciation Night as Lion Country Kia presents the festivities. The Spikes will also wear their special Patriotic Hats for the game, which are up for bids now in a Patriotic Hat Auction benefiting Local Military Personnel, also presented by Lion Country Kia. Bidding will take place on the LiveSource app, which can be downloaded at LiveSourceApp.com.

Monday, the series concludes with the first Super Splash Day of the season. The Spikes and Yankees will meet at noon, and Ike's Kids Zone will turn into the Splash Zone. In addition, it's a Monday Buck Day presented by 95.3 FM 3WZ, with $1 hot dogs, peanut boats and small sodas, and a MillerCoors Monday featuring half-price Miller Lite and Coors Light from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
