Spikes' Fast Start Thumps Crosscutters, 12-6

STATE COLLEGE, PA- The State College Spikes scored seven runs in the first inning, all with two outs, to propel themselves to a 12-6 win over the Williamsport Crosscutters in a SawBuck Series matchup at Historic Bowman Field on Wednesday.

State College (36-36) sent 12 batters to the plate in the first inning, collecting eight hits and a walk. After a pair of groundouts, Justin Byler's base hit to right field was followed by Aaron Baker's two-run homer to right field to jumpstart a streak of six consecutive base hits.

Byler, Pat Irvine and Elevys Gonzalez each had a three-hit night for the Spikes. Gonzalez knocked in three runs and became the first player in franchise history to hit two triples in one game, nearly hitting an inside-the-park home run in the sixth before being tagged out at the plate.

Kyle McPherson (4-3) earned the win for State College in his tenth quality start of the year. The 2009 Spikes Pitcher of the Year went seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out one.

Siulman LeBron (4-6) took the loss for Williamsport after lasting just two-thirds of an inning in his fourth start of the season against the Spikes. LeBron did not strike out a batter in his time on the mound.

With the win, State College tied the season series with Williamsport at 5-5, and the all-time series at 23-23.

Thursday, the Spikes and Crosscutters play the second game of their three-game series at Historic Bowman Field at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Brent Klinger (0-0) goes to the mound for State College in his first appearance with the Spikes in 2009 to face Williamsport right-hander Jonathan Pettibone (2-3).
