Tri-City Scores 7 Runs In 1st Inning And Beats Lake Monsters 15-5

BURLINGTON, VT --- Tri-City scored seven runs in the top of the first inning and went to a 15-5 victory after the Vermont Lake Monsters had taken the completion of a suspended game from August 23rd by a score of 10-5 in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at historic Centennial Field.

The suspended game resumed with Vermont leading 3-0 in the top of the third inning and the Lake Monsters quickly added another run as Destin Hood lined the second pitch of the night to leftcenter to score Sean Nicol from first base. Vermont added two more runs in the fifth for a 6-0 lead before Tri-City got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Lake Monsters increased the lead to 10-2 with four runs in the seventh, including RBI singles from Ronnie LaBrie and Dani Arias. The ValleyCats put three runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh before Jacob Goebbert popped out to short to end the game.

Hood was 2-for-3 with one run, two doubles and one RBI in the suspended game, while Nicol was 2-for-3 with three runs, a double and RBI. Mitchell Clegg allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits with four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings of relief for the win. Brian Kemp and Jorge De Leon both had a hit and two RBI for the ValleyCats.

In the night's regularly-scheduled game, Tri-City scored seven runs on just two hits in the top of the first inning. After a bases-loaded hit batter and walk gave the ValleyCats a 3-0 advantage, Jorge De Leon cleared the bases with a triple and scored on a throwing error to cap off the seven-run inning. Tri-City added three more runs in the second inning for a 10-1 lead.

Erik Castro was 3-for-4 with four runs, a double, homer and three RBI for Tri-City (24-37), while Johnny Medrano was 3-for-4 with a run, double and five RBI. J.D. Martinez was 2-for-2 with four runs scored, while Wander Alvino (4-7) allowed five runs over five innings for the win. J.P. Ramiez was 3-for-4 with two runs and two triples, the sixth player in Vermont history with two triples in one game.

Tri-City led 14-5 in the sixth inning when Vermont catcher Ricky Nolan came on in relief, allowing one run on two hits with one walk and three strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. Lake Monsters infielder Adam Amar also pitched, giving up a hit and getting a bases loaded groundout to end the seventh inning.

Vermont will wrap up its 2009 home season on Thursday night at Centennial Field against Tri-City beginning at 7:05 pm. The night will include the annual "Jersey Off Their Backs", giving fans a chance to win game-worn Lake Monster jerseys in a silent auction.
