Cutters Doubled up by Spikes
September 2, 2009 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
Williamsport fell to the rival State College Spikes 12-6 on Wednesday night at Historic Bowman Field.
The Spikes literally put the game away in the top of the first scoring seven runs in knocking Cutters starting pitcher Siulman LeBron (4-6, 4.75) out of the game after only 2/3 of an inning.
LeBron was able to retire the first two batters of the game before everything went downhill. LeBron did not record another out in the inning and the Spikes sent a total of twelve batters to the plate.
1B Arron Baker launched a two-run bomb off the scoreboard for the first two runs of the inning. The next four batters all laced singles; following a walk, two more Spikes hit RBI singles sending LeBron to the showers early.
RHP Ebelin Lugo was able to record the final out of the inning via a strikeout ending the Cutters nightmare top of the first.
Williamsport scored two runs in the bottom of the 2nd to make it an 8-2 game. C Sebastian Valle led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on 1B Darin Ruf's double down the third-base line. 3B Anthony Hewitt drove a fly ball to right that allowed Valle to tag and score the first Cutter run. Ruf who advanced to third on Hewitt's sacrifice fly, scored on 2B Adam Buschini's RBI groundout to third for the second run.
State College added to their lead in the sixth with a run on 2B Elevys Gonzalez's RBI triple. On the play, Gonzalez attempted to score on an inside-the-park home run, however Buschini's relay throw to home was on target and Doss applied the tag for the out.
The Spikes scored two more runs in the top of the 7th and another in the top of the 9th to increase their lead to 12-2.
Despite being down ten runs in the bottom of the 9th Williamsport did not quit as they were able to score four runs making the final score 12-6.
Cutters C David Doss and RF Leandro Castro each had two hits in the game to lead the Crosscutters offensively.
The 2009 SawBuck Series is now tied at fives wins each with two games left to play Thursday and Friday at Bowman Field. Both games begin at 7:05 and can be heard on ESPN 1050AM, 104.1FM or online at crosscutters.com.
