State College Spikes News Release
JAMESTOWN, NY-The State College Spikes took advantage of walks and errors early and late, adding enough firepower to roll to a 9-1 win over the Jamestown Jammers on Tuesday night at Russell Diethrick Park.
State College (33-31) jumped out to a 5-1 lead through four innings, and added to it with help from two Jamestown (26-38) errors and nine walks issued by Jammers pitching. The nine free passes were the most allowed by a Spikes opponent all season.
The Spikes added timely hitting as well. Aaron Baker went 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs batted in and three runs scored. Pat Irvine's RBI single in the seventh gave him 38 for the season, tying him with Staten Island's Neil Mechill for second place in the New York-Penn League.
Nelson Pereira (4-5) got the victory for State College, pitching four innings in relief of Spikes starter Phillip Irwin and retiring 12 of the 13 batters he faced. Irwin allowed his first home run as a professional, a solo shot by the Jammers' Austin Markel in the third inning, but did not allow another run over four innings, and struck out five.
Jamestown starter Curtis Petersen (2-5) took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on two hits and five walks. The Jammers' pitching staff also combined for five walks total in the third inning, and four wild pitches in the game.
Wednesday, the Spikes and Jammers play the second game of their three-game series at 7:05 p.m. at Russell Diethrick Park. State College will send left-hander Nathan Baker (0-0) to the mound for his first professional start. Baker will be opposed by Jamestown right-hander Joe O'Gara (2-4).
Fans can catch all of the action on the Spikes Radio Network and flagship station 3WZ at 95.3 FM starting at 6:50 p.m. with the Spikes GameDay Show live from Diethrick Park.
The Spikes' radio broadcast can also be heard worldwide through the "Listen Live" link on StateCollegeSpikes.com, provided by 95.3-3WZ.
