BROOKLYN, NY --- Collin McHugh allowed one run on three hits over six innings, while Luis Rivera and Dock Doyle both led off innings with a triple and later scored as the Brooklyn Cyclones defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters 3-1 in New York-Penn League action Tuesday night at KeySpan Park.

McHugh (8-2) walked two and struckout five over the six innings for his eighth win of the season, tying him for the league lead. He retired seven of the first eight batters faced before a Dani Arias double and Francisco Soriano RBI single tied the game 1-1 in the third inning.

The only other hit allowed by McHugh was a Ronnie LaBrie one-out double in the fifth inning, but LaBrie was thrown out trying to stretch the double into a triple. McHugh walked Soriano and Sean Nicol to open the sixth inning, but got a pair of foul outs and a flyout to escape the inning. After Jake Goldberg tossed two scoreless innings, Michael Powers picked up his league-leading 15th save with a scoreless ninth for McNamara Division-leading Brooklyn (41-23)

With the score tied at one, Rivera opened the bottom of the fourth with a triple to centerfield and scored when Sam Honeck followed with a sacrifice fly for a 2-1 Brooklyn lead. Doyle led off the fifth with another triple to centerfield and scored on a one-out wild pitch by Vermont starter Kyle Morrison.

Morrison (2-3), who pitched at nearby Wagner College before being drafted by the Washington Nationals this year, allowed three runs on eight hits with one walk and six strikeouts over six innings to take the loss. Reliever Gary Amato had two strikeouts in two scoreless innings for Vermont (29-34).

After splitting the first two games of the series, the Lake Monsters and Cyclones will meet in the series finale on Wednesday night. Vermont returns to historic Centennial Field on Thursday night as the Lake Monsters open an eight-day homestand through September 3rd.
