NORWICH, CT - Connecticut Tigers starter Clemente Mendoza, who came into the game with an ERA of 7.88, held the State College Spikes to just two hits and no runs over eight innings to earn the win as the Spikes collected just three hits total and fell, 5-0, on Thursday night at Dodd Stadium.

State College (14-13) received singles from Walker Gourley in the first inning and Miguel Mendez in the sixth against Mendoza. Matt Curry extended his streak of consecutive games with a hit to 12 with a ninth-inning single against Connecticut (14-13) reliever Antonio Cruz.

Mendoza (2-3) struck out seven and walked two, and allowed more than one baserunner in just one inning. Mendez's sixth-inning single, followed by a walk to Adalberto Santos, put runners on the corners with two outs. However, the Tigers starter came back with a strikeout of Curry to end the Spikes threat.

Zack Dodson (0-2) started and drew the loss for State College, allowing three third-inning runs on four hits and three walks in four innings total. Dodson also struck out five, matching his career high as a professional.

Connecticut jumped out in front in the third thanks to a double by Alexander Nunez, followed by Matt Perry's RBI single and a two-run single by James Robbins later in the frame. Robbins collected a total of three RBI's, and Perry went 3-for-4 on the night.

Friday, the Spikes and Tigers meet in the final game of their three-game series at Dodd Stadium, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. State College will send right-hander Quinton Miller (0-0) to the mound for the third start of his minor league rehabilitation assignment. Miller threw four scoreless innings to begin a 3-0, shutout win for the Spikes over the Vermont Lake Monsters this past Sunday. Connecticut will counter with right-hander Patrick Cooper (1-1), making his fourth start of the season after being picked in the 14th round by the Tigers out of Bradley University in 2010.
