Jamestown Jammers News Release
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - Starting pitcher Rett Varner and three relievers combined to hold the Yankees to one run on five hits and the bats did the rest in a 5-1 win over Staten Island. The win extends the Jammers' winning streak to five straight games.
Staten Island's only run came in the top of the seventh inning, when outfielder Marcell Ozuna misplayed a shallow fly ball into a run-scoring hit. But by that time, the Jammers were already ahead by four runs.
Danny Black started the scoring with an RBI-double in the bottom of the third inning, plating Noah Perio with the game's first run. Perio doubled in Aaron Senne in the bottom of the fourth to make it 2-0 Jamestown.
Senne doubled the lead in the fifth with a two-run single, and he drove in the Jammers' final run with a single in the seventh. He finished with a 3-for-4 night with three RBIs and one run scored.
Four Jamestown pitchers held the Yankees in check for most of the game. Varner, making his Jammers debut, pitched four shutout innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out three batters.
Saul Gonzalez followed with three innings of one-run ball to earn his second victory of the season. Isaac Morales pitched a scoreless eighth and Jordan Conley pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve the win.
Jamestown goes for the sweep tomorrow at 7:05 pm. Josh Hodges will take the mound for the Jammers against Michael O'Brien for the Yankees.
