Lake Monsters Get 20th Win Of Season With 7-6 Victory Over Aberdeen

BURLINGTON, VT --- Wade Moore scored from second base on a sacrifice bunt throwing error to give the Vermont Lake Monsters a 7-6 New York-Penn League victory over Aberdeen on Thursday afternoon at historic Centennial Field.

After Aberdeen had tied the game 6-6 in the top of the ninth, Moore greeted Ironbirds reliever T.R. Keating with a line drive single to center. After Keating hit Jason Martinson to move Moore to second, Connor Rowe put down a sacrifice bunt that first baseman Michael Flacco thew away at first base to allow Moore to come around and score the winning run.

The Ironbirds had taken an early 5-1 lead with the help of a four-run top of the fourth inning, including a two-run single fom Michael Rooney. But the Lake Monsters rallied with single runs in the fourth on a Russell Moldenhauer RBI single and fifth on a Ronnie LaBrie RBI single before scoring three runs in the sixth for a 6-5 lead.

David Freitas, who went 3-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, got the sixth-inning rally stated with an RBI double to centerfield to score Hendry Jimenez. Moore followed with a sacrifice fly to leftfield to score pinch runner Justin Miller with the tying run and Jason Martinson singled to center to score Freitas with the go ahead run.

The Ironbirds were able to tie the game in the ninth as Vermont reliever Neil Holland gave up three staight one-out hits, including a Trent Mummey RBI double. Holland was able to keep the game tied as he threw out Adam Gaylord at the plate on a comebacker for the second out and then Michael Flacco on a flyout.

Moldenhauer was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Moore, Martinson and LaBrie each had two hits for the Lake Monsters. Reliever Aaron Barrett had four strikeouts in 2 1/3 scoreless innings and Mark Herrera two hitless innings for Vermont (20-7), which moves 13 games over .500 for the first time this season and the first time since 2000.

Omar Casamayor was 2-for-5 with one run and a double for Aberdeen (12-15), while Keating (1-2) allowed the unearned run in the ninth inning to take the loss.

Vermont will wrap up the three-game series with Aberdeen on Friday night beginning at 7:05 pm. It is the Lake Monsters annual salute to the "Summer of Love", while former University of Vermont/current Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas will be at Centennial to sign autographs and throw out the first pitch.
