Rio Grande Valley Dorados News Release
HIDALGO, TX: June 30, 2004 â The arenafootball2 (af2) Rio Grande Valley Dorados made a roster move today by welcoming assigned wide receiver/defensive back Eric Spencer to the roster and placing wide receiver/defensive back Donté Wells on re-assignment.
Spencer, a 5'11" 175-pound Houston native, is a new face to the Dorados, but a familiar face around the Dorado players. He played his final college season in 2001 at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, which produced current Dorados members Abel Gonzalez, Nicholas Davis, Eddie Moten, Raymond James, and Mike Clay. Speaking of Clay, the two are best friends and it seems where one goes, so goes the other. The two were high school teammates at Aldine Nimitz High School, where he played quarterback and passed for 780 yards while rushing for 980 and receiving 100 with 8 touchdowns, and were recruited together to the University of Missouri. Spencer saw the field as a true freshman in 1998 and appeared in 8 games. He appeared in 11 games as a sophomore and finished third on the squad in receiving with 28 receptions for 265 yards and 3 touchdowns. The 24 year-old co-led Tigers receivers in touchdowns in 2000 with 4 and was second in receptions with 35 catches for 493 yards. Spencer transferred at the close of the 2000 season to TAMUK to get closer to his son in Houston and ironically followed Clay, who had also transferred to the Javelinas program. He was Abel Gonzalez' go-to man in 2001 and recorded 11 touchdowns off of 53 receptions and 613 yards. Gonzalez completed 12 passes to Spencer in a contest against Prairie View A&M to tie a school record for receptions in a single-game. Spencer also averaged 19.1 yards in kickoff returns and 8.5 yards in punt returns. He earned All-Lone Star Conference honors and was the Lone Star Conference South Receiver of the Year, earning him a trip to the 2002 Cactus Bowl. Spencer signed with the Canadian Football League's Toronto Argonauts after the season.
Departing the Dorados is Donté Wells. Wells, a wide receiver/defensive back from Dallas, had been with the squad since training camp. He was just activated last week after missing two games due to an injury, but was de-active for Saturday night's game in Birmingham. The Midwestern State product appeared in eight games with the Dorados this season and had 21 receptions for 230 yards and 3 touchdowns on offense and grabbed 11 tackles (9 solo) and a fumble recovery on defense in the eight games. Wells has 285 all-purpose yards (230 receiving, 55 kickoff return yards), which ranks fifth on the team, and his 21 receptions is tied for third on the squad. His single-game best this season was in Central Valley, as he collected a pair of touchdowns and had 8 receptions for 94 yards.
Rio Grande Valley makes the moves in preparation to end their current seven game winless streak this Saturday night at the Dodge Arena against the Wichita Stealth, who started the streak. The Stealth defeated the Dorados 35-28 on May 8th at the Dodge Arena and have since gone 2-4. Wichita was on a bye week this past week and their last game was a 62-34 loss against Tulsa. The last time the two teams faced off, Will Burch was the signal caller for the Dorados and Aaron Sparrow was the quarterback for Wichita. Both players are no longer on the team's rosters and Wichita now has former Kansas State standout Jonathan Beasley running the offense. Beasley is averaging 175 yards per game and has thrown 23 touchdowns in 5 games.
It will be a patriotic celebration this Saturday, as Airastar national recording country music artist and Alice, Texas native Kelly Kenning will be performing at the BudZone FanZone outside the Dodge Arena beginning at 4 PM and he will play until the Dorados 7:30 PM kickoff against the Wichita Stealth, in which the Dorados will be wearing special commemorative patriotic themed jerseys. The jerseys are made possible by the United States Border Patrol and they will be auctioned off to the fans immediately following the game. Individual tickets are currently on sale and may be purchased by stopping by the Dodge Arena offices (2600 N. 10th St. in Hidalgo, Tx) or ordering by phone at 956-843-7825. Additional ticket information and corporate opportunities are available by contacting the Dorados offices at 956-843-7825 or visit the Dorados online at www.doradosfootball.com.
