Steeldogs snare number one spot in week 14 poll
Published on June 30, 2004 under arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - By a 12-point margin the Birmingham Steeldogs topped the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers for the No. 1 position in the Week 14 Coaches' Poll, the league office announced today. This marks the second time this season that the Steeldogs landed in the No. 1 spot. They also earned the ranking in Week 10.
The Steeldogs received 263 points including 13 first-place votes. The second place Pioneers captured 251 points and five first-place votes. In the third spot was the Tulsa Talons with 211 points and one first-place vote. The Cape Fear Wildcats came in at No. 4 with 199 points and five first-place votes, after finishing in ninth last week. The only other team to receive a first-place vote was the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz, who landed in the seventh spot in the poll.
Along with the Steeldogs, Talons and Wildcats, three other teams moved up in this week's poll. The Quad City Steamwheelers moved from seventh to fifth, the Bakersfield Blitz climbed from 10th to eighth and the Memphis Xplorers came in at No. 10 after not appearing in the Top 12 last week.
There is one game between Top 12 teams in the schedule this weekend as the No. 4 Wildcats travel to Memphis to face the No. 10 Xplorers on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. ET.
Each week during the season af2 coaches vote for the Top 12 teams in the league by ranking them one through 12 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 12 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 12th receives one point. Total points determine the Top 12 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes is ranked higher. The af2 Coaches' Poll is announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll results have no bearing on postseason qualification.
