Omaha Lancers News Release
Ralston, Neb. - The Waterloo Black Hawks netted three power play goals and added a shorthanded marker Friday evening en route to a 5-2 victory over the Omaha Lancers in front of 3,088 fans at the Ralston Arena. Following the setback, Omaha moved to 4-8 on the year and is now 0-2 on the season against the Black Hawks.
Waterloo grabbed the game's opening marker with less than five minutes remaining in the first period when, while on the power play, Mitch DeMario's shot from the right point generated a rebound atop the goal crease which was promptly stashed in by Kevin Duane for his fourth goal of the season. Mark Friedman earned the secondary assist on the man-advantage marker netted 15:25 into the opening period. The power play conversion was the first man-advantage goal surrendered by the Lancers in the last six games.
The Black Hawks doubled their lead just past the midway point of the second period when Pijus Rulevicius lifted a side angle shot from the left wing into the back of the Lancers net for his third goal of the season. Brandon Salerno and Blake Winiecki assisted on the five-on-five tally notched 11:11 into the middle stanza. The Lancers trimmed Waterloo's lead in half exactly two and a half minutes later when Alex Rauter settled a bouncing puck at the top of the goal crease before swatting in his third goal of the year. Ryan Tait and Drew Melanson assisted on the even strength goal netted 13:41 into the second period. Waterloo pulled away though late in the second period thanks to a pair of power play tallies. First, Ryan Papa lifted a cross-crease pass to Mike Huntebrinker on the left side of the goal who connected for his first goal of the season. Duane earned the secondary assist on the man-advantage marker notched 15:36 into the second period. Then, amidst a five-on-three power play generated from 24 minutes in penalties and a game ejection of Lancers head coach Mike Aikens, Victor Newell launched a right point one-timer into the back of the cage for his second goal of the season. Dane Cooper and Jake Horton assisted on the power play goal netted 19:23 into the middle stanza. The man-advantage conversion was Waterloo's league leading 15th power play goal of the season.
Omaha climbed back to within two goals less than four minutes into the final period when a tremendous individual effort by Luca Frigo landed the Italian import his first career USHL goal. The even strength strike came 3:49 into the final period. But that's as close as the Lancers would get as Waterloo stretched its lead back to a three-goal advantage less than two minutes later when Horton popped in a shorthanded goal from Huntebrinker and Cooper for his fourth goal of the season.
Waterloo's Cal Peterson earned the victory in goal after 28 saves on 30 Lancers shots. Peterson is now 4-0 on the season and 2-0 against Omaha. Meanwhile, Alex Lyon suffered the loss for the Lancers despite 32 saves on 37 Black Hawks shots.
The Lancers are back in action tomorrow evening when the team travels to Cedar Rapids for its first showdown of the season with the RoughRiders.
