Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Three power play goals and another scored shorthanded Friday boosted the Waterloo Black Hawks past the Omaha Lancers 5-2 at Ralston Arena.
The scoreboard showed that the Black Hawks were being outshot 12-1 at one point during the first period, but Waterloo still recorded the first goal of the contest. With 4:35 remaining before intermission and the Hawks on an advantage, a shot by Mitch DeMario came to Kevin Duane at the front of the net, and Duane shoveled it through the pads of Alex Lyon.
Pijus Rulevicius added to the lead 11:11 into the second period, when his centering pass for Blake Winiecki deflected into the net. Omaha tallied two-and-a-half minutes later, sending all of their forwards to the net after a failed clearing attempt; Tyler Hynes hacked the puck in.
Waterloo carried the remaining minutes of the period on special teams. Mike Huntebrinker, playing in his first game of the season, stuffed in a power play opportunity at 15:36, set up for the close range chance by Ryan Papa. Then on a two-man advantage in the closing minute of the period, Victor Newell blasted a shot into the net from the right point, scoring against his former team with 36.7 seconds remaining before intermission.
The teams traded goals in the third. During a four-on-four shift at 3:49, Luca Frigo fished a puck off the end wall and knocked a shot past Cal Petersen. However, just over a minute later, Jake Horton scored shorthanded, following Huntebrinker to the front of the net for a rebound marker.
After 21 Waterloo shots on goal in the second period, the Hawks finished the affair with a 36-30 edge in chances. Cal Petersen made 28 saves in the victory.
The Black Hawks five-game road trip ends Saturday against the Des Moines Buccaneers. Following that matchup, Waterloo will face Omaha again, returning to Young Arena for a contest on Friday, November 9th. Tickets for the 7:05 tilt are on sale now from waterlooblackhawks.com.
