Special Teams Lead Penguins Past Crunch

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins got two goals from both their power play and penalty kill units to down the Syracuse Crunch, 4-3, on Sunday at Onondaga County War Memorial at Oncenter. The win was the Penguins' sixth in a row and eighth straight on the road, tying their own AHL-high set earlier this season.
Leading 2-1 in the middle period, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton saw Kyle Palmieri complete a 2-on-1 odd man rush at 9:17 to even the score.
The Penguins' special teams then continued their red-hot play to help build a two-goal after two periods of hockey. Jason Williams blistered a slapshot past Iiro Tarkki at 11:44 that put Wilkes-Barre/Scranton back on top, 3-2. Alex Grant provided the first assist for his second helper of the contest and his eighth point (2g-6a) in three games on the weekend.
Three minutes later while on a 5-on-3 penalty kill, Ryan Craig sprung Brian Strait coming out of the penalty box for his second goal on the year.
Palmieri would shrink the Penguins' lead to one 4:27 into the third period with his second goal of the match. Brad Thiessen held the Crunch off the scoreboard for the rest of regulation to register his 16th win of 2010-11. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's goalie made 32 saves in the game and has won five of his last six starts.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's man-advantage got things started at 7:19 of the first. Colin McDonald was alone in front to collect the rebound from Joey Mormina's shot and throw it into the open net for his 11th goal of the season.
Syracuse would tie the score with at 16:09 when Bryan Rodney fired a wrister from the slot that squeezed past a screened Thiessen.
With Syracuse on the power play, Zach Sill helped Wilkes-Barre/Scranton retake its one-goal lead 4.3 seconds before the first intermission. The Penguins forward intercepted a pass and broke in alone for a squibbler between the pads of Tarkki that was Sill's ninth goal of the year.
