Aeros Fall in Shootout

HOUSTON --- Casey Wellman scored twice and added an an assist and Marco Scandella had a goal for the Houston Aeros in a 4-3 shootout loss to the San Antonio Rampage Sunday at Toyota Center.

Justin Fontaine had two assists and Matt Hackett made 28 saves for Houston, who are 21-9-3-9 and moved into sole possesion of second place in the AHL's West Division with the shootout point. The Aeros sit five points back of No. 1 Oklahoma City.

Houston has seen seven consecutive games decided by one goal while four of the team's last six games have required either overtime or a shootout to decide. The Aeros have earned a standings point in six of those seven games.

Wellman and Kris Foucault scored for Houston in the shootout, but Greg Rallo, Jon Matsumoto and Michal Repik each scored for San Antonio in the shootout to give San Antonio the win.

Scandella put Houston back on top with a goal at 2:04 in the second period to make it 2-1, and Wellman followed 49 seconds later with another power play goal to up the lead to 3-1.

Matsumoto, however, scored at 4:11 in the second to cut the lead to 3-2 and netted his 16th goal of the season with a power play goal at 11:17 in the second to tie the game at 3-3.

Wellman gave the Aeros a 1-0 lead at 11:10 in the first period with a power play goal, but Bill Thomas tied it at 1-1 with a power play goal at 15:37 in the first period.

Houston hits the road for the next two starting Friday against the Oklahoma City Barons at 7 p.m. at Cox Arena. The Aeros return home Thursday, Feb. 2 against the Texas Stars at 7:05 p.m. at Toyota Center.

Wellman is now sixth in the AHL with nine power play goals... Wellman had Houston's first three-point game of the season. It was his first three-point effort since March 25, 2011 vs. Oklahoma City... Jeff Taffe notched his team-leading 20th assist of the season on Wellman's first goal and has three assists in two games... Justin Fontaine has points in three straight games (2-2=4) and four of the last five games (3-2=5)... Fontaine had his fourth two-point game of the season with two assists... Marco Scandella scored his first goal as an Aero since March 2, 2011 when he had two goals against Rockford.
