July 25, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Everett AquaSox News Release
EVERETT, Wash. - The AquaSox lost to the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, 6-4, Wednesday afternoon after an ninth-inning rally by the visitors plated three runs to take the lead.
The Sox took a 4-3 lead into the final frame and were one out away from the victory, but a few singles, a walk and a fielding error opened the door for Salem-Keizer to score three runs and go up by two.
The Frogs came to bat in the bottom of the ninth inning in attempt to salvage the win, but were retired in order. Shortstop Ketel Marte recorded a single on a flare down the left-field line, but tried to make it a double and was thrown out at second base.
Marte appeared in the two-spot of the AquaSox lineup for the second straight day, checking in with two hits and a stolen base in both games.
Right-hander Dylan Unsworth gave up three runs on five hits and three walks to go along with three stirkeouts in 5.2 innings pitched. The 19-year-old from South Africa didn't give up a walk until the fourth inning, snapping a streak of 16 consecutive innings without walking a batter.
Salem-Keizer right-hander Tyler Mizenko (1-0, 2.87 ERA_ earned his first win as a professional, while Sox reliever Matt Vedo (1-2, 1.93 ERA) was charged with the loss.
Taylor Ard recorded two hits with two RBI to become the Northwest League's leader in RBI, though that could change Wednesday night as Everett and Salem-Keizer were the only teams in the league to play an early game.
The AquaSox (1-1, 29-11) have yet to lose a series at home, and will look to continue that streak with a win Thursday night against the Volcanoes (1-1, 14-26) in the final game of the three-game series. Left-hander Scott DeCecco (0-1, 4.50 ERA) will take the ball for the Sox, and will be opposed by right-hander Joe Biagini (0-3, 3.38 ERA) of Salem-Keizer.
