Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Colorado Springs Sky Sox split their double-header with the Nashville Sounds, losing game one 19-0 and winning game two 9-6 in front of 3,192 fans at Security Service Field.
After game one was postponed due to rain, the two teams had to wait through a two hour and thirty eight minute rain delay Thursday before beginning play. In game one, the sounds scored in every inning except the first while pounding out five home runs. Each Nashville starter had at least two hits including Logan Schafer who went 4-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored and three RBI. The 19-0 loss was the worst shutout loss in team history, besting a 15-0 defeat on August 11th, 1988 against Albuquerque. The previous worst shutout loss in a seven inning game was 11-0 against the Portland Beavers on June 20th, 1993.
Sox starter Clayton Mortensen (1-6, 10.55) struggled allowing eight runs (seven earned) on ten hits in 3.2 innings while picking up the loss. Mike Fiers (4-0, 1.73) picked up the win with 6.0 scoreless innings while scattering five hits and striking out seven.
In game two, the Sox bats found life. Trailing 6-2 in the third, they would score six runs to take the lead, highlighted by a Mike Jacobs two-run home run and a Matt Pagnozzi three-run homer. Jacobs finished 1-for-2 with three RBI to bring his season RBI total to 95 which is tied for the most in Minor League Baseball.
Reliever Keith Weiser (1-0, 5.23) picked up the win in relief with two scoreless innings. Sounds starter Sam Narron (5-5, 4.78) took the loss allowing eight runs on ten hits in 3.0 innings. Closer Jim Miller pitched a perfect ninth for his 18th save of the season.
Prior to game three tomorrow, the Sky Sox will open the gates at 5:00 PM MT for fans to watch Carlos Gonzalez and the rest of the team take batting practice. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM MT.
