Iowa Cubs News Release

Fresno held off a late rally by Iowa and went on to win 3-2 Friday night at Principal Park. The start of the game was delayed one hour and one minute due to rain.

The I-Cubs were held scoreless through seven innings before scratching across two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Steve Clevenger and Ryan Flaherty led of the inning with back-to-back singles as Iowa tried to climb out of its three-run deficit. Scott Moore was brought in to pinch-hit and grounded a sharp ball to first base than sneaked under the glove of Brad Eldred. Eldred was charged with an error as Clevenger scored and Flaherty moved to third. Brett Jackson followed with a line-drive double into right-center field that plated Flaherty and got Iowa within one run. With two outs, Brad Snyder walked to load the bases but Dan Otero got Bryan LaHair to strike out to end the inning and the Cubs' rally.

The Grizzlies scored all three of its runs in the top of the fourth. Hector Sanchez doubled with two on and two out to give Fresno a 2-0 lead and Justin Christian doubled two batters later to score Sanchez.

Iowa struggled offensively with runners in scoring position, going 1-for-8 at the plate.

Jay Jackson (5-12, 6.22) was charged with the loss despite pitching a quality start. Jackson gave up three runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out two over six innings.

Fresno starter Andrew Kown (10-7, 4.27) picked up his first win of the second half. Kown gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits, walked one and struck out three.

Marc Kroon pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his 19th save of the season.

Iowa and Fresno will play the final game of this series Saturday night at Principal Park. RH Felix Romero (0-4, 5.37) is scheduled to take the mound for the Grizzlies and will face Cubs' RH Casey Coleman (4-2, 4.06). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
