Iowa Cubs News Release

Outfielder Matt Spencer has been promoted to Triple-A Iowa announced today by the Chicago Cubs. In a corresponding roster move, RHP Chris Carpenter was placed on the disabled list with a strained oblique retroactive to August 3.

Spencer, a third-round draft pick in 2007, was hitting .258 with 21 doubles, 13 home runs, and 63 RBI in 98 games with Tennessee this season. He was one of 12 Smokies to be named to the Southern League All-Star Game after he batted .287 with 17 doubles and 12 home runs in the first half. Spencer joined the Cubs' organization in 2009 after being traded from Oakland with Jeff Gray and Ronny Morla for Jake Fox and Aaron Miles on December 4th.

In his first season with the Cubs' farm system last year, Spencer split time between Daytona and Tennessee. He played in just nine games with Daytona to start the season before being promoted to the Smokies where he batted .268 with 15 doubles, 17 home runs and 65 RBI over 112 games.

Carpenter has pitched at three levels this season, spending most of his time in Iowa. He's also had stints with Chicago and Tennessee. In 20 games with the I-Cubs, he is 2-3 with one save and a 6.28 ERA in 20 appearances. Carpenter has seen his best results with Chicago. In 10 games with the Cubs, he had a 2.79 ERA and yielded runs in only two of his outings.
