Sox Rally to Top Tornadoes 11-5

July 4, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

The Worcester Tornadoes notched two separate leads, but couldn't hold either of them for an inning as the Amarillo Sox rallied to erase 1-0 and 4-1 deficits en route to a 11-5 victory Wednesday night at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium.

A five-run fifth for the home team was the fifth multi-run inning against the Tornadoes in the series. The frame started off with back-to-back triples by Matt Tucker (who fell just a homer short of the cycle) and Jake Opitz (who was one hit short of hitting for the cycle on Tuesday). Six of the first seven hitters that inning reached safely, including a Mitch Albeita three-run home run. Amarillo never trailed after that point, finishing the inning with a 9-4 advantage.

Worcester's club earned its first lead from a Brandon Pinckney solo homer in the first, and he knocked the second Tornadoes run with a single three innings later. Nick Salotti added a pair of runs knocked in with a single of his own three batters after that to make it 4-1 Worcester.

Tucker came in to score on a Ryan Bicondoa balk in the first, tying the game at one run apiece. Alberto Espinosa's two-run homer pulled Amarillo back within a run, and Garrett Rau scored (an unearned run) on the Harrison Kain base hit to tie the game at four in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Ryan Bicondoa was dealt the loss, throwing five innings in the start for the Tornadoes. The Worcester pitching coach allowed nine runs (eight earned) on 12 hits, but no walks. He struck four Sox hitters out.

The Tornadoes added another run in the ninth inning off of Chase Johnson, as Chris Torres' sacrifice fly plated Alex Trezza (who led the inning off with a walk).

Chuck Lofgren notched the win with six innings pitched, giving up four runs on five hits, plus a pair of walks. He also struck out four opposing batters in his start.

Bryan Leigh pitched two perfect innings (the sixth and seventh), striking out two batters.

Kyle Regnault pitched in the eighth inning for Worcester, walking one batter and hitting one as well. He allowed two Sox runs on two hits and struck out one batter (the only out he recorded). He was relieved by Matt McDonald, who retired both batters he faced.

Game three of the series is Thursday at 8:05 EST. Dan Sausville will make his second start of the Texas road trip for the visitors.
