Nandin's Tenth-Inning Suicide Squeeze Gives Rockland 2-1 Victory
July 4, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release
Pomona, NY - Orlando Mercado's game-tying solo home run in the eighth preceded the Rockland Boulders' tenth-inning walk-off victory, as they top the Jackals 2-1 on a cool night at Provident Bank Park.
Kyle Greenwalt was fantastic, but allowed a home run to the final batter he faced. In his best outing of the year, his final line is 7.1 IP, ER, 5 H, 5 K, BB.
Working quickly, confidently, and effectively, Greenwalt was cruising into the eighth until Orlando Mercado delivered a "what just happened" home run into the left-field seats, his first of the year. Philip Cuadrado started the bottom of the tenth inning off with a triple to left center. Cole Kraft came in to pinch-run and scored on Matt Nandin's suicide squeeze.
Rockland was coming off a three-game losing streak to Quebec - all of which were one-run games, the latter two Quebec walk-offs.
Woods is tossed his first loss of the season. He drops to 1-1. Rockland's Andy Martin came in to the ninth and retired all six batters he faced. He improves to 4-2.
Dan Jurik was excellent for the Boulders. He goes seven full frames, allowing the one run on seven Jackals hits, as New Jersey could only muster a fourth-inning RBI single by Carlos Guzman.
The Jackals drop to 24-19, and with Quebec well on their way to another win, it appears New Jersey will drop to six full games back of Quebec. Rockland improves to 19-23 (four-and-a-half back of New Jersey), as they gain ground on the all-important two-spot in the Can-Am League.
Tomorrow, the Jackals send out RHP Steve Fox (6-1, 2.29 ERA). On America's birthday, the Boulders will counter with RHP Bobby Blevins (4-5, 3.68 ERA). First pitch is 6:00pm, with the pregame show starting ten minutes prior.
The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2012 single-game tickets, season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.
