Can-Am League Game Recaps
July 4, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
New Jersey 8, Rockland 6
Jackals LF Francisco Carabello led all players in hits, going 3-for-4 with a game-high five RBI, including a three-run homer in New Jersey's four-run fifth inning that put the visitors on top for good. New Jersey defeated Rockland, 8-6. The blast was Carabello's third of the season. Leadoff Rockland DH Jon Smith hit his second homer of the night in the ninth inning, cutting the Jackals' four-run advantage in half. But New Jersey reliever Keith Cantwell retired the next two Rockland batters to seal the victory and pick up the two-inning save. Smith went 2-for-5 on the night with two runs and three RBI.
Quebec 6, Newark 0
The Capitales got a stupendous performance from starting pitcher Jeff Duda, who struck out 12 Bears batters in a complete-game two-hitter. With Duda shutting down the Bears in the batter's box, the Capitales offense powered its way to a 6-0 victory. 1B Josue Peley hit his seventh home run of the season, and 3B Jonathan Malo went a perfect 4-for-4, pacing the Quebec offense. But Capitales fans likely didn't leave the game talking about the Quebec batters. The contest was all about Duda, who fanned five Newark batters before surrendering his first hit, a fourth-inning single to leadoff Newark SS Mike Richard. Even more impressive, Duda's double-digit strikeout performance went along with a zero-walk n ight. The hurler now has 62 strikeouts to just 11 free passes on the season.
Amarillo 11, Worcester 5
The Tornadoes twice took a lead in the early innings only to see the Sox respond to tie the score in the bottom of the inning. And then, in the bottom of the fifth, Amarillo plated five runs and were well on their way to an 11-5 victory. The Sox opened the inning with back-to-back triples from Matthew Tucker and Jake Opitz. Tucker ended up a home run shy of the cycle, going 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI while Opitz went 2-for-5, scoring once and batting in one run. The Tornadoes got three hits from 2B Brandon Pinckney, including a solo home run in the top of the first that kicked off the contest's scoring. Pinckney's blast was the only four-bagger of the contest.
