Southern Maryland Falls Just Short of Sweeping High Point

Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

Waldorf, MD - Riding the hottest stretch of baseball to this point in the 2019 campaign, Southern Maryland had a chance to notch their first series sweep of the season in the finale against the High Point Rockers. The Rockers plated a half dozen runs in the top of the fifth inning, which would kill Southern Maryland's chances at the sweep, as they would fall to High Point by a final count of 9-4.

Kyle Simon (L, 1-4) got the call to the bump in his first appearance in a Blue Crab uniform. The long ball, which is the strongest asset that High Point possesses, would be the slow but steady stream that the Rockers rode to a victory. They sent three home runs out of the ballpark off of the right-handed Simon who allowed a run in each of his first three innings of work, two of which came via the long ball.

After being no-hit through two innings, the Blue Crabs' bats broke through in the bottom of the third. Tony Thomas led the frame off with a hot-shot double that bounced off of the mini-monster in left field, and was brought home to score one batsman later on an RBI single from Edwin Garcia. Southern Maryland, a team plagued by runners left on base in this contest, did get one run to cross in each of the next three innings, but could never muster the momentum to achieve the coveted "big inning".

High Point, a squad who's downfall to this point in the series had been allowing the "big inning", gave the Blue Crabs a taste of their own medicine with a whopping six runs in the top of the fifth inning of play. It was kickstarted by a leadoff home run off of the bat of Viosergy Rosa, and continued as a hit-by-pitch and a walk would spell the end of Simon's debut outing. John Hayes came in relief of Simon, and a walk followed by a bases clearing triple opened the flood gates, putting the tally at nine runs.

The Rockers spoiled Southern Maryland's hopes of a sweep in a 9-4 High Point victory, but the good guys did pick up their fourth series win in their last five tries, accounting for all of their series wins on the season.

The Blue Crabs will return home tomorrow, June 24th, for the series opener of a three game set against the York Revolution, with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch.
