Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Bridgewater Township, NJ - The Blue Crabs headed back to TD Bank Ballpark in search of a series sweep, but a Patriots three spot in the fifth was a mountain Southern Maryland couldn't quite climb in a 5-4 loss.
The Blue Crabs got on top of this one in the third. The first sign of scoring was a Tony Thomas sacrifice fly followed by Kent Blackstone stealing third base and advancing home on an error, putting the Blue Crabs ahead 2-0.
In Tommy Thorpe's (L, 2-6) fifth inning of work he ran into some trouble. After a brilliant first four innings that kept the Patriots nearly out of the hit column, Somerset plated three in the fifth. Teodoro Martinez's RBI double started it off, giving the former Blue Crab four RBI hits in six games against Southern Maryland this season.
After the Patriots added two in the seventh, the Blue Crabs tightened things up with a rally in the eighth. Charlie Valerio tripled to bring in Thomas, and Jon Griffin knocked Valerio in to make it a 5-4 game.
The scoring wouldn't change as the Patriots rebounded to pick up the victory, thanks to nice performance by Zach Dodson (W, 1-1), and Chris Beck (S, 2).
The Blue Crabs will return home Friday August 30th for the series opener of a four game set with the York Revolution, with a 5:05 p.m. first pitch with game two of a double header to follow.
