Memphis Xplorers News Release

Southaven, MS-The af2 league office has assigned WR/LB Elgin Hicks to the Memphis Xplorers. Hicks, 5'10'' 195 pounds, is the second assignment for Memphis this week.

Originally from Port Charlotte in Florida, National Blue Chips ranked Hicks as one of the top four receivers in the nation. During his junior year at Charlotte High School, he had 69 receptions for 2,183 yards, which is an average of more than 36 per catch. He earned All-State recognition during both his junior and senior years in high school.

Hicks originally attended to the University of Florida, before transferring to the University of South Florida in 2000. In 2002 Hicks played in all 12 games for the Bulls, where he caught 21 passes for 250 yards, including four receptions for 45 yards against Oklahoma. During his senior season with the Bulls, Hicks set the USF single season record with seven touchdown catches. In a Conference USA match-up against the East Carolina Pirates, Hicks had three catches for three touchdown receptions, including the game winner in double overtime.

"Being a fellow Floridian, I have been familiar with Elgin Hicks since his high school days," commented Xplorers Head Coach Danton Barto. "He dealt with a hip injury early in his college career, but has since bounced back to show his potential."

Xplorers Director of Player Personnel Chris Bauer added, "This is a big time assignment for this team. (Elgin) Hicks is as skilled as anyone who has ever played in the af2. His speed on the shorter fields will make him very tough to cover."

During an NFL tryout, Hicks demonstrated his quickness with a speedy 40-yard dash time of 4.43 seconds. Hicks was later signed as a free agent by the Indianapolis Colts of the NFL, before being the teams final wide receiver released.

"The Colts have some of the best receivers in the NFL," added Barto. "Being their last receiver released is the kind of thing that tells us he will be a phenomenal player this upcoming season."

The Xplorers were ten game winners in their 2004 playoff season. For season ticket information call 662-393-3761. Memphis Xplorers Arena Football! Xciting! Xhilirating! Xtreme! Football!
