Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN -- The South Bend Silver Hawks scored eight times in the bottom of the sixth inning to record an 8-4 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Tuesday at Coveleski Stadium. Derrick Walker and Taylor Harbin both homered in the inning as South Bend erased a 3-0 Timber Rattler lead.
The Rattlers (6-9) scored first for the first time in ten games when they tallied two runs in the top of the third inning. Edilio Colina was at the plate with one out and runners at second and third. His grounder to short was mishandled for an error. The runner from the third scored on the play. One out later, Alex Liddi singled in a run for a 2-0 Rattler lead.
Wisconsin tacked on another run in the top of the fifth inning. Daniel Carroll doubled with one out. Calvin Beamon singled to right with two out and Carroll scored for a 3-0 lead. The Rattlers could have used a few more runs.
Rattler starting pitcher Juan Ramirez was cruising through the middle innings. He had retired nine straight and allowed just three hits in the first five innings. But he ran into trouble and a lot of it in the sixth. Harbin drew a four pitch walk to start the inning. Ramirez retired the next batter for the first out of the inning. Then, the real rally started.
Aaron Hanke singled to put runners at first and second. Ramon Ramirez singled to center and Harbin scored the first run of the game for South Bend. That single ended the day for Ramirez, but not the scoring for the Silver Hawks.
Clayton Conner greeted Rattler reliever Keith Meyer with an RBI single to make the score 3-2. Walker was next and he lifted a homer deep to left. The three-run shot gave South Bend a 5-3 lead. Meyer gave up a double off the first base bag to Gerard Bustamante before getting the second out of the inning.
Justin Souza replaced Meyer to get the third out, but it took a few tries. Evan Frey singled to center and Bustamante scored. Harbin, who walked to start the inning, homered to left-center and the Hawks had an 8-3 lead.
South Bend reliever Dan Fournier had a better day than the Rattler bullpen. He pitched the final three innings to get the save. Wisconsin did get the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth inning. Korey Feiner singled in a run to cut the lead to four runs. The Rattlers would load the bases with one out, but Fournier got out of the inning with a pop out and a fly out to give South Bend their first winning streak of the season.
Wisconsin wraps up their road trip with a game Wednesday evening against the Silver Hawks. Edward Paredes (1-1, 5.63) is the scheduled starter for the Timber Rattlers. Christian Beltre (0-2, 5.40) is set to go for the Silver Hawks. Game time is 6:30pm EDT/5:30pm CDT.
