Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Quad Cities River Bandits drew a season-high 4,645 fans to a matinee affair on Tuesday afternoon, but the home team managed to turn 13 hits into just two runs in a 5-2 loss to the Burlington Bees at Modern Woodmen Park.
The loss dropped Quad Cities (8-9) below the .500 mark for the first time in nearly two weeks, but the River Bandits will look to regroup in the second game of their season-long nine-game homestand on Wednesday night. Burlington (8-9) was carried by pitcher Eduardo Paulino and third baseman Jason Taylor in the series-opening victory.
Paulino (1-2) struck out five over six shutout innings, scattering six hits but keeping the River Bandits off the scoreboard for his first win of the year. Meanwhile, Taylor turned in a monster day at the plate, homering twice and stealing two bases while scoring three runs and driving in three.
Taylor led off the second inning with a solo homer to left field, and moments later an RBI-single by Zach Evangelho made it 2-0. In the fourth inning Taylor was at it again, blasting another leadoff bomb to left to push Burlington's lead to 3-0.
The Bees added to the advantage in the sixth. Taylor drew a leadoff walk in his third plate appearance, and proceeded to steal both second and third base over the next few batters. Clint Robinson was at the plate with one out when catcher Luis De La Cruz misplayed a high pitch from piggyback starter Blake King, allowing Taylor to score on a passed ball for a 4-0 margin.
The deficit was 5-0 before the River Bandits finally cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth. Andrew Brown got it started with a two-out flare to center that dropped down for a single. Matt Arburr followed by slugging a double the other way to right-center that scored Brown all the way from first. One pitch later, Domnit Bolivar added a bloop-single to right that plated Arburr to pull Quad Cities to within 5-2.
But that was as close as the River Bandits would get. Adron Chambers and Pete Kozma hit consecutive singles with two outs in the ninth to bring the potential game-tying run to the plate, but Yensi Lopez (1) got Charlie Kingrey to bounce out to the first baseman for the final out.
Andres Rosales (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing more than one run in an outing for the first time this season. The 19-year-old from Colombia allowed three runs on four hits over four innings, striking out three and walking three.
UP NEXT: The River Bandits continue their season-long nine game homestand with game two of a three-game series against the Burlington Bees. Wednesday's game will be full of great prizes on Price is Right Night, while Thirst-Day Thursday will double as Irish Night in a nod to Irish culture. The Great Lakes Loons come in for the weekend, which will include '90s Night on a Fireworks Friday, a Pedometer giveaway sponsored by the Heath Alliance on the first Rockin' Saturday of the year - featuring a live post-game concert from "Superfly" - and Soccer Day on a U.S. Bank Family Sunday. The homestand concludes with three more games against the Lansing Lugnuts, highlighted by Chiropractor Appreciation Night on April 28, another Noon Book Buddies Day on April 29, and Ladies Night featuring a Teeth Whitening Giveaway and FREE MANICURES on Wednesday, April 30.
