EL SEGUNDO - The South Bay Lakers ended their two-game skid as they beat the Sioux Falls Skyforce, 133-118, on Sunday night. Gary Payton II continued his hot start to the season for South Bay (3-3) with 21 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and five steals. Mychal Mulder led the Skyforce (3-5) in scoring with 24 points.
Balanced scoring by the Lakers put South Bay up by four, 26-22, after one. Travis Wear led his team through the first with seven points. Demetrius Jackson pitched in seven points off the bench in the second and Kostas Antetokounmpo tallied eight of his own to give the Lakers a 65-51 halftime lead.
The Lakers extended their lead in the third as everyone on the team pitched in. The starters scored 24 and the bench tallied 17 in the period to give South Bay a 106-86 lead. South Bay was able to hold off their opponent in the final frame, as Payton II scored nine points in the closing period to secure the victory.
Mulder's 24 points led Sioux Falls and Daryl Macon finished with 23 points and six assists. Kyle Alexander grabbed a 14-point, 17-rebound double-double and Marquill Smith led the second unit with 17 points and seven rebounds. Also in double figures for Sioux Falls were Jeremiah Martin with 15 points and Bubu Palo with 13 points.
The fourth double-double of the year by Payton II guided the home team to the win, while David Stockton tallied 12 points and 13 assists in his first start of the season. For the sixth consecutive game, Devontae Cacok recorded a double-double, this time with 17 points and 13 rebounds off the bench. Wear led the team in scoring with 24 points and Zach Norvell Jr. found a rhythm with 15 points. Jackson (12 points) and Antetokounmpo (10 points) also finished with double-digit scoring nights.
South Bay now hits the road for the holiday as the travel to take on the Austin Spurs on Friday, November 29 at 5:30pm from the H-E-B Center at Cedar Park in Cedar Park, TX.
