Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE â After Sounds batters combined to hit only one home run in the club's first six games in July, J.J. Davis and Randall Simon hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning to highlight Nashville's 7-1 victory against the Oklahoma RedHawks on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium, which completed a sweep of the three-game series against the division rivals.
The win extended two Sounds winning streaks. It was Nashville's sixth straight win overall and 11th in a row at home, which equal the season-opening 11-game home win streak from April 3-20. The victory over the âHawks also resulted in Nashville's fifth sweep; the others came against Iowa, Omaha, Memphis, & Colorado Springs.
Nashville's win combined with New Orleans' 6-1 loss at Memphis earlier in the day resulted in the Sounds now holding a 1 ½ game lead in the Pacific Coast League's East Division over the Zephyrs, who visit Greer Stadium for a three-game set beginning on Monday evening.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Nashville roared back in its half of the stanza. With one out, Tony Alvarez singled to left. He advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt by RedHawks starter Ryan Drese. Davis chased Alvarez home on a single to left and Davis advanced to second on the throw home. With two out, John Barnes lined a single to left that scored Davis before Rob Mackowiak plated Barnes with the third run of the inning on a bloop single down the left-field line.
Barnes and Mackowiak were the major contributors to the Sounds' fourth run of the game. In the last of the fourth, Barnes was on first with two down after reaching on a fielder's choice. He stole second, his seventh swipe this season, and scored on Mackowiak's single to center.
The longballs came out in the last of the seventh. Tike Redman drew a walk to start the inning. After an Alvarez strikeout, Davis sent a 1-1 pitch off rehabbing lefty Aaron Fultz over the wall in left field for his team-leading 18th homer of the year. He sits tied for second in the PCL with Sacramento's Graham Koonce. Randall Simon followed Davis by belting a 1-1 offering off the yellow line in right-center for his first home run with the Sounds. In his two rehab games, Simon is hitting .375 (3-for-8) with a homer, double, two RBI, and three runs scored.
After allowing an unearned run in the first, All-Star John Wasdin (8-4) hurled seven shutout innings to earn his team-high eighth win of the year. He fanned six, upping his PCL-leading total to 116. Drese (3-5) took the loss for Oklahoma after allowing four runs in six frames of work.
On Monday, the Sounds welcome the second-place Zephyrs into Greer for the first of three between the East's top two teams. Right-hander Nelson Figueroa (8-5, 3.35) will take the mound for Nashville and be opposed by New Orleans southpaw Greg Miller (0-2, 6.43) in the 7:00 p.m. contest.
