Chiavacci Shuts Down Beavers
July 6, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Ron Chiavacci tossed eight strong innings-allowing just four hits and striking out nine-and contributed a two-run double at the plate Sunday afternoon as the Edmonton Trappers defeated the Portland Beavers 9-1 in front of 6,856 at PGE Park.
Chiavacci (2-1) did not issue a walk and retired the side in order five times, sitting down 13 straight at one point to pick up his second win of the year.
Valentino Pascucci got the scoring underway in the top of the first with a three-run home run. He finished with four RBIs and was one of five batters with two hits to lead the Trappers' 13-hit day at the plate.
The win increased the Trappers' lead to a game-and-a-half over the Beavers (45-46) in the Pacific Coast League's North Division.
Luis Figueroa added a solo home run in the third and the Trappers (44-42) plated two more in the fourth on a two-RBI double by Chiavacci.
Jason Bay, who joined the Beavers Sunday on a major league rehabilitation assignment, sent a second-inning solo home run over the right-field wall in his first at-bat back for Portland's only score.
Edmonton gave Jose Silva a rude welcome to the game in the seventh, tacking on three more runs in the frame.
Mike Bynum dropped his fifth decision of the year, allowing six runs on eight hits in five innings of work.
Portland continues its current homestand Monday night by playing host to the Tacoma Rainiers in the first of a three-game series. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
NOTES: The Beavers placed catcher Wiki Gonzalez on the Disabled List (strained calf) Sunday and added catcher Adam Shorsher from Class A Eugene.
