Nashville Sounds News Release

NASHVILLE — In front of a crowd that included Pittsburgh Pirates General Manager Dave Littlefield, U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft, country music star Trisha Yearwood, Oak Ridge Boy Richard Sterban, and NASCAR driver Casey Atwood, the Sounds – led by the offense of J.J. Davis and the pitching of Matt Guerrier – extended their winning streak to seven in a row, defeating the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, 5-1, on Monday night at Greer Stadium.

Guerrier (3-5) extended his personal win streak to three by throwing eight dominating innings, striking out three while walking none. He did not allow a runner past second base in the first seven innings. He finally lost his shutout bid in the eighth when Colorado Springs centerfielder Choo Freeman led of the frame with a solo home run, his fifth of the season.

In his last three outings, Guerrier has limited the opposition to four runs over 22 2/3 innings of work, a stingy 1.59 ERA. In addition, he has walked only two batters in his last 27 2/3 frames.

The Sounds offense got started in the second inning. With one out, Nashville batters recorded four straight hits. Davis opened the floodgates against Sky Sox starter Jason Young by launching the first pitch over the left-field wall for his team-high 15th longball. Humberto Cota followed with a ground-rule double into the gap in left-center. Cota moved up on a passed ball and scored when Aaron Holbert lined a single past a drawn-in infield. Guerrier helped himself with a well-placed liner over the head of Sky Sox first baseman Kit Pellow, advancing Holbert to third. A Tike Redman squeeze bunt scored Holbert and Guerrier scored on a Dave Doster single combined with an error by Freeman.

Nashville scored its final run in the fifth inning after the first two men were retired. Tony Alvarez hit a screamer to the base of the wall in center and scored one batter later when left-fielder David Newhan trapped Davis' line drive double.

Tike Redman swiped his league-leading 31st base in the bottom of the first inning for Nashville, which improved to 43-34 with the victory. Alvarez finished 2-for-3 and made the final out with a spectacular diving catch down the left field line to rob pinch-hitter Rene Reyes and thwart a late Sky Sox rally.

The Sounds will look to sweep away the Sky Sox in Tuesday's 7:00 p.m. series finale. Right-hander John Wasdin (7-3, 3.49) will take the mound for Nashville. His counterpart will be Colorado Springs southpaw Cory Vance (8-5, 4.00).

CATCHERS TO HOST CLINIC: Nashville catchers Blake Barthol and Brad King will host a baseball camp for 50+ children at Greer Stadium on Tuesday morning as part of the Academy Sports & Outdoors Little League Clinic. They will give participants basic baseball instruction and will sign autographs following the 9:00 a.m. clinic.
