Nashville Sounds News Release
Colorado Springs, CO- Pinch-hitter Chris Donnels drove a one-out, bases-loaded single to right field in the bottom of the tenth inning to propel the Colorado Springs Sky Sox to a 6-5 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Tuesday evening at Sky Sox Stadium in the finale of a four-game series.
Andy Abad gave the Sounds an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second when he belted his fifth home run of the year, a solo shot to left off Brian Tollberg. Colorado Springs quickly knotted the contest in the bottom of the frame on Garrett Atkins' leadoff solo blast before jumping ahead 5-1 with a four-run fifth inning against Nashville starter Justin Reid.
The Sounds got a run back on Keith McDonald's leadoff solo homer in the seventh inning. The backstop's second longball of the year was part of a 3-for-3 effort that extended his season-best hitting streak to 11 games, equaling Chris Truby for the longest hit streak by a Nashville player this season.
Nashville knotted the contest with a three-run eighth against Colorado Springs reliever Jason Gilfillan. Chris Truby, Luke Allen, and McDonald all walked to load the bases with one out for pinch-hitter Scott Sheldon, who ripped a bases-clearing double to center to even the score at 5-5.
Neither team scored until the decisive eleventh. Jorge Piedra opened the inning for the Sky Sox with a leadoff single against Sounds reliever Luther Hackman. After Andy Tracy grounded out, Atkins was intentionally walked and Erick Almonte loaded the bags with an infield single. The pitcher's spot came up next in the order, prompting Colorado Springs manager Marv Foley to summon Donnels from the bench to deliver the game-ending knock.
Allan Simpson (1-1) recorded the win for the Sky Sox following two scoreless innings of work, while Hackman (0-1) was dealt the loss in his first decision in a Nashville uniform after allowing the game-winning run.
The Sounds join the entire Pacific Coast League for an off day Wednesday before beginning a brief three-game homestand against the division-rival New Orleans Zephyrs on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium. It will be the teams' first meeting in Nashville this season; they have already completed their two series in New Orleans, with the Sounds taking five of those eight contests.
Nashville right-hander John VanBenschoten (3-6, 4.16) will start Thursday's 7:00 p.m. opener and face New Orleans left-hander Carlos Hernandez (4-3, 4.99).
