Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE -- The Nashville Sounds dropped the finale of their eight-game homestand on Friday evening, losing a 7-2 decision to the Iowa Cubs in front of a season-high 10,004 fans at Greer Stadium. The defeat resulted in a split of the four-game series.
Iowa took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on Donny Leon's solo homer to left off Nashville starter Sean Burnett, the first roundtripper surrendered by the southpaw this season. The Cubs doubled the advantage in the fourth on another solo homer against Burnett, this one a first-pitch one-out shot to right by Matt Creighton.
The visitors tacked on a third run in the fifth when Trenidad Hubbard â who went 3-for-4 in the game - tripled on Burnett's first pitch of the inning and scored a batter later on a Calvin Murray fly to right.
Iowa attempted to add even another run in the sixth but Nashville outfielder J.J. Davis, in the first game of a rehab stint from Pittsburgh, threw out Leon at the plate from right as he attempted to score on Casey Kopitzke's flyout. Davis went 0-for-4 in the contest at the plate in his first action since being placed on the Pirates' disabled list on May 14.
The Sounds finally got on the board with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh. Andy Abad â who continued his hot hitting with a 2-for-4 effort â hit a one-out single and moved to third on Chris Truby's team-leading 16th double. Both runners scored when Iowa starter Sergio Mitre's first pitch to Carlos Rivera eluded Kopitzke and the backstop's throw back to the plate went wild.
Nashville missed a huge scoring opportunity in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases with two down before former Sounds hurler Kevin Tolar fanned Abad to escape the jam.
Iowa posted an insurance run in the ninth on Russ Johnson's RBI single before Bill Selby put the game out of reach with his fourth home run of the year, a three-run bomb to right off reliever Hector Almonte to up the lead to 7-2.
Mitre (1-0) picked up a victory in his Triple-A debut after allowing only two unearned runs in his seven-inning stint. Burnett (1-3) took the loss after allowing three runs in his seven innings of work. He surrendered two home runs in his outing after allowing only two home runs over his previous 37 starts (209.0 IP).
The Sounds begin an eight-game road trip on Saturday evening in New Orleans with the 7:05 p.m. CDT opener of a four-game set against the division-rival Zephyrs. Left-hander Dave Williams (3-1, 3.34) takes the hill for Nashville to face New Orleans right-hander Taylor Bucholz (3-6, 7.14).
Nashville completes the trip with a four-game stop in Albuquerque before returning to Greer Stadium on Monday, June 14 to open an eight-game homestand.
