Portland bats still cold in 5-2 loss

Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Kevin Correia couldn't quite pull off what his predecessors accomplished over the previous two nights.

Correia pitched seven strong innings for his first win of the season, leading the Fresno Grizzlies to a 5-2 victory over the Beavers Thursday night in front of 5,590 at PGE Park.

Correia, however, did what no Fresno pitcher had done in the first two games of the series with the Beavers - give up a run.

The Grizzlies (26-29) posted back-to-back shutouts over the Beavers on Tuesday and Wednesday and were nearly as stingy Thursday, limiting Portland to six hits.

Correia (1-4) struck out five and allowed four hits and a run, the Beavers' first in 22 innings.

Fresno pitchers have limited the Beavers (25-30) to a .179 team batting average in the first three games of the series that wraps up Friday night at PGE Park.

The Grizzlies, winners of six straight, took advantage of two early errors by the Beavers to claim a 2-0 lead with an unearned run in the each of the first two innings.

Jason Ellison scored on a bases-loaded, double-play groundout in the top of the first. Ellison's RBI fielder's choice plated Dave Doster in the second for the two-run lead.

The Beavers responded in the bottom of the second when Bobby Scales doubled home Yamid Haad, who doubled to lead off the inning.

Fresno rallied for a pair of runs in the fifth for a 4-1 lead. Lance Niekro tripled home Todd Linden and Francisco Santos followed with an RBI double.

Linden tacked on another in the sixth when his single up the middle scored Trey Lunsford.

The Beavers loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth against reliever Dave Aardsma and managed to plate a run when Jose Nieves scored from third as Doster's error allowed J.J. Furmaniak to reach base.

With the bases still loaded, Aardsma stuck out Alex Fernandez on a called third strike to end the game and give the Grizzlies a 3-0 lead in the series.

The loss sent Portland starter Marty McLeary (0-2) to his second defeat of the season. He gave up five runs (3 earned) on six hits in 5.0 innings of work in his third start of the year.

Reliever Blaine Neal pitched two scoreless innings for the Beavers, extending his string of innings without allowing an earned run to 15.

Portland's Freddy Guzman singled twice and stole two bases, the third time in his seven games with the Beavers he has stolen two in a games.

NOTES: Grant Wistrom, defensive end for the Seattle Seahawks, threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the game. Wistrom was in town promoting "Seahawks Live," an Aug. 7 event highlighted by an intra-squad scrimmage and practice at PGE Park ... Portland trainer John Maxwell was named to the PCL all-star field staff on Thursday ... Tagg Bozied is hitless in 14 at-bats at PGE Park this season. He is batting .378 on the road ... Haad, who had two hits, has a five-game hitting streak ... the Beavers wore their red "alternate" jerseys at home for the first time.
