Seattle Sounders FC News Release
SEATTLE, WASH. -Seattle Sounders FC forward Chad Barrett has been voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for week 11 of the 2015 MLS season.
Barrett opened his 2015 scoring account with a pair of goals that propelled Sounders FC to a 2-0 Cascadia Cup victory over Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday. The brace marked Barrett's first since May 8, 2010, when he scored twice in Toronto FC's 4-1 win versus the Chicago Fire.
With starting striker Obafemi Martins sidelined by injury, Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid tabbed Barrett to start alongside U.S. international Clint Dempsey. The 30-year-old, making his second start of the season, wasted no time making his presence felt on the pitch. In the fifth minute, Barrett sliced through a pair of Vancouver defenders, chased down a perfectly weighted through ball from Dempsey, and flicked a right-footed redirection past David Ousted to give Seattle a 1-0 lead.
Later, in the 38th minute, Barrett completed his brace and boosted Sounders FC to the top spot of the Cascadia Cup standings. He again made an impeccably timed run and slipped behind Vancouver's backline, this time smashing a left-footed volley into the far corner off a perfect feed from Marco Pappa.
Seattle Sounders FC returns to action this Saturday when it hosts Sporting Kansas City at CenturyLink Field (7:00 p.m. PT / JOEtv, Univision-Seattle, ROOT SPORTS, KIRO Radio 97.3 FM, El Rey 1360 AM).
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/.
