Colorado Rapids News Release
Marlon Hairston has returned to Colorado Rapids following a loan spell with USL affiliate Charlotte Independence, with Ben Newnam heading in the other direction.
Hairston, 21, made six appearances for the Independence (four starts), registering one goal and two assists. His goal came in the 3-0 home win over Richmond Kickers on May 8. He also enjoyed an assist, as a result of which he was named USL Player of the Week.
Newnam was one of the first players signed by the new Charlotte franchise, back in January. He then enjoyed a good preseason with the Rapids, and joined the MLS club on March 21. His only appearance for the Rapids came at New York Red Bulls on April 29, when he played the full 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw.
Second-year MLS pro Hairston made 22 appearances for the Rapids in his rookie season, including nine starts. His only goal came in the 4-3 home loss to LA Galaxy on August 20.
Goalkeeper John Berner suffered a right knee contusion during Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Harrisburg City Islanders, and exited the game early. He has returned to training and will be in contention for Wednesday's US Open Cup third round encounter at home to Upward Star.
Meanwhile, young striker Caleb Calvert - another of the Rapids players on loan at Charlotte - suffered a head injury against Harrisburg, which required 10 stitches. Subsequent tests reveal he did not suffer a concussion, but he will be withdrawn from full-contact training until the stitches are removed.
Charlotte Independence are 2-3-2 after seven league games, and lie ninth in the Eastern Conference. Their next USL game is at second-place Charleston Battery this Saturday.
