
Sounders FC Defeats Archrival Portland Timbers 2-1 on Sunday Afternoon at Providence Park

PORTLAND, ORE. - Sounders FC (3-5-4, 13 points) won 2-1 over the Portland Timbers (2-6-4, 10 points) on Sunday afternoon at Providence Park. Cristian Roldan and Raúl Ruidíaz both scored for the Rave Green, as the visitors took three points against their longtime Cascadia rivals. Today's contest marked the 120th all-time meeting between the Sounders and Timbers dating back to 1975, with the Rave Green now holding a 57-46-17 advantage in the series.
With the result, Seattle jumped into 10th place in the Western Conference, three points below the playoff line. Brian Schmetzer's side continues its road swing on Wednesday, May 15 against Real Salt Lake at America First Field (6:30 p.m. PT / Apple TV, iHeartMedia Seattle, El Rey 1360 AM), before returning home on Saturday, May 18 to host Vancouver Whitecaps FC on the Emerald Queen Casino Pitch at Lumen Field (7:30 p.m. PT / Apple TV, iHeartMedia Seattle, El Rey 1360 AM).
MATCH NOTES
Sounders FC is now 10th in the Western Conference with 13 points (3-5-4). Portland falls to 14th place in the West, staying on 10 points (2-6-4).
Sunday marked the 120th all-time meeting between the Sounders and Timbers dating back to 1975. Seattle leads the all-time series 57-46-17.
Since the Timbers entered MLS in 2011, Seattle leads the regular-season series 15-14-9.
Seattle now vaults into second place in the Cascadia Cup standings with three points (1-1-0). Vancouver sits in first place with six points (2-0-0) and Portland is in last with zero points (0-2-0).
Cristian Roldan scored his first goal of the 2024 campaign in the first half, his fifth career strike against the Timbers in regular-season play.
Raúl Ruidíaz's second-half strike gives him a team-leading seven on the season, tied for sixth in MLS.
Ruidíaz's 13 goals against Portland in MLS play (including postseason) are the most of any player in league history versus the Timbers. The Peruvian is tied among active players for the most goals against one club.
Ruidíaz now has 85 goals for Sounders FC across all competitions, the most in club history.
Obed Vargas and Cristian Roldan were credited with their second and third assists of the season, respectively, on Ruidíaz's goal.
Cristian Roldan now passes Fredy Montero and moves into sole possession of second in club history with 53 assists across all competitions.
After being cautioned in the second half, Nouhou is suspended for Wednesday's match against RSL due to yellow card accumulation.
