Seattle Sounders FC News Release

VANCOUVER, B.C. - Kenny Miller and Darren Mattocks scored goals as Sounders FC (7-6-3, 24 points) fell, 2-0, to Vancouver Whitecaps FC (8-5-5, 29 points) Saturday night at BC Place. The loss marked the first-ever MLS defeat to Vancouver for Seattle (3-1-3), as the two teams are now tied atop the 2013 Cascadia Cup standings with four points apiece.

Miller put Vancouver up 1-0 in the fourth minute when he collected a long ball from Corey Hertzog in the box, eluded the Seattle defense, and finished with a low-rolling shot that hit the far post and went in. It marked the earliest goal allowed by Sounders FC this season and the first career goal for Miller against Seattle (four games).

Mattocks made it 2-0 in the 79th when he chased down a Gershon Koffie flick-header into the box, held off a Seattle defender, and tapped a left-footed shot over the keeper and inside the far post.

Despite not scoring, Seattle managed 16 shots (including seven on goal) and created a number of dangerous chances. Vancouver goalkeeper Brad Knighton made seven saves en route to his second shutout of the year.

In the 22nd minute, Obafemi Martins fed Eddie Johnson, who got some space in the penalty area for a shot that was saved and cleared. Lamar Neagle's ensuing corner kick found Zach Scott at the near post for a header, but Knighton again made the save.

Four minutes later, Knighton came off his line to make a save on Johnson's shot after Shalrie Joseph played him into the box, then jumped up to deflect Martins follow-up attempt 15-yards off his line.

Sounders FC returns to action next Saturday with a road match at the San Jose Earthquakes. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. PT at Buck Shaw Stadium.
