Chicago Fire FC News Release
CHICAGO, Ill. (July 7, 2013) - Major League Soccer announced today that Fire forward Mike Magee has been named to the 2013 MLS All-Star Fan XI. The MLS All-Stars will face Italian giants AS Roma at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan. on Wednesday July 31 in the 2013 MLS All-Star Game at 8:00 p.m. CT (ESPN2/UniMas).
The Fan XI received the most votes at their respective positions from combined fan voting on three platforms - online at MLSsoccer.com, via text message, and via Twitter. The ballot consisted of at least six players from each club, as chosen by a panel of media members.
The All-Star nod is the first of Magee's 11-year MLS career. The two-time MLS Cup champion with the Galaxy joined the Fire on May 25, 2013 and has scored seven goals in his first seven matches across all competitions. Magee's four goals and two assists in MLS play have led the Fire to a 4-0-1 run since joining the club. Named MLS Player of the Month for March and June, Magee currently sits tied for first place in the tightly-contested MLS Golden Boot race with 11 goals on the season.
A Chicago, Ill. native, Magee was the fourth overall selection in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft by the then New York/New Jersey MetroStars after a two-year stay at the U.S. Soccer Residency program in Bradenton, Fla. After six seasons with the New York side, Magee headed west when he was acquired by the Galaxy prior to the start of the 2009 season. The 28-year-old has 46 career goals and 26 assists in 240 career regular season games.
The 11th player - a forward - on the Fan XI will be decided on July 11, as part of the AT&T MLS All-Star 'In the Game' Challenge. Among the remaining forwards on the ballot, the player with whom fans score the most goals in FIFA Soccer 13, with one goal equaling one vote, from July 3-July 10 will be named to the Fan XI. Fire forward Chris Rolfe is one of the 26 players that are eligible to be voted in via the FIFA 13 game.
The Fan XI are not necessarily included on the game day roster. MLS All-Star coach Peter Vermes will select the roster based on player availability and tactical considerations, but all Fan XI players are All-Stars.
Two selections by MLS Commissioner Don Garber, and Vermes' complete 18-man game day roster, will be announced on Monday, July 15.
Under the CBA, a total of 32 players will be named All-Stars. After the game day roster, the remaining players receiving the All-Star honor will come from voting among MLS players and will be announced July 31.
