Sound Tigers Lose 2-1 At Home To Norfolk
February 21, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 2-1 at home to the Norfolk Admirals Saturday snapping a two-game, home-ice win streak.
Norfolk took the first lead of the game with a four-on-four goal just 2:37 into the contest as Yorick Treille scored his ninth goal of the season off an assist from Duncan Keith. However, a former Admiral tied the game late in the opening frame.
Mike Souza, who played two and a half years in Norfolk before being reassigned to the Sound Tigers by the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks in November of 2002, redirected a Rob Collins shot for his sixth goal of the season at 13:49 of the first period to tie the game at 1-1. It was the first tally for Souza since re-joining the Sound Tigers on a professional tryout contract yesterday after starting this season with the ECHL's Florence Pride then spending 27 games with the AHL's Portland Pirates. Martin Kariya also assisted on the equalizer.
After a scoreless second period, in which the Sound Tigers outshot the Admirals 4-2, Norfolk regained the lead with a redirection goal on the power play as Blake Bellefeuille tipped a shot past Sound Tigers Goaltender Wade Dubielewicz for his third marker of the season with 10:16 left to play. Matt Keith and Burke Henry assisted on the go-ahead goal.
The Sound Tigers spent four of the final five minutes of the game on the power play as the Admirals were whistled for a pair of penalties. They also pulled Dubielewicz in favor of an extra attacker with just under a minute to play but could not tie the game.
Bellefeuille was the first star of the game, Norfolk Netminder Michael Leighton was the second with 19 saves, and Souza was the third. Dubielewicz finished with 22 saves as the Admirals outshot the Sound Tigers 24-20, including 12-7 in the third period. The Sound Tigers were 1 for 7 on the power play while Norfolk was 1 for 6.
The Sound Tigers will visit the Hartford Wolf Pack Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. and the Albany River Rats Friday at 7 p.m. They will return home to host the Providence Bruins at Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard next Saturday, February the 28th at 7:05 p.m.
