PROVIDENCE, R.I (Mar. 13, 2011) - The Sound Tigers scored five unanswered goals and Joel Martin made 28 saves as Bridgeport defeated the Providence Bruins 5-1 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence on Sunday afternoon. The win snaps the Sound Tigers eight-game winless streak as they improve to 22-36-3-5. The Bruins fall to 30-32-3-2.
Providence took the lead 8:58 into the first period. Following a faceoff win by Trent Whitfield in the Sound Tigers zone, the Bruins fired a shot from a bad angle that made its way through traffic in front of Martin and snuck its way off the far post and in. Jordan Smotherman was credited with the goal and the Bruins had a 1-0 lead.
However, the Sound Tigers responded with two goals late in the period to jump in front. Brett Gallant earned his first career AHL goal with a deflection off of Steve Tarasuk's shot from the point with 2:23 left in the period. Both Tarasuk and Justin Taylor also earned their first career AHL points with assists on the play. The Sound Tigers took a 2-1 lead with 1:01 left in the opening frame when Rhett Rakhshani knocked Ty Wishart's shot from the point past Michael Hutchinson for his 16th goal of the year.
The Sound Tigers carried a 2-1 lead into the second period when they took control of the game courtesy of their power play. Following Andrew Bodnarchuk's delay of game penalty at 5:57, Robin Figren found Tony Romano wide open by the left post on a cross-ice pass, and the rookie forward beat Hutchinson for his sixth goal of the season to put the Sound Tigers up by two. The Sound Tigers pushed their lead to three as Mark Katic scored just 2:35 later on the power play from the left circle. Hutchinson was replaced in favor of Anton Khudobin following Katic's power-play tally. Maxime Sauve's tripping penalty at 11:46 led to another Sound Tigers power play, and Jeremy Colliton made Providence pay as he knocked the rebound from the point past Khudobin to give the Sound Tigers a commanding 5-1 lead.
The four-goal cushion was more than enough for Martin, who stopped all 10 Bruins shots in the third period as the Sound Tigers came away with the 5-1 win, marking their first road victory since Jan. 22 at Worcester.
The Sound Tigers return to action Wednesday night at 7 p.m. when they kick off a four-game homestand against the Charlotte Checkers in their first ever visit to Webster Bank Arena.
