Milwaukee Holds off Peoria 2-1

Two goals in a span of 11 seconds made the difference on Sunday as the Peoria Rivermen fell to the Milwaukee Admirals, 2-1 at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee. Peoria rallied with a goal from Derek Nesbitt late in regulation, but could not tie it up after pulling Jake Allen in the final minutes.

The Rivermen (35-25-2-5, 79 pts) fall to fourth place in the West Division, now four points behind the division leading Admirals.

After a relatively calm first period that saw just one penalty and 19 combined shots, Milwaukee's Mark Van Guilder broke the scoreless tie at 7:35 of the second period. Kelsey Wilson put a pass through the crease to Van Guilder who slapped the puck home between the legs of Allen for his ninth of the season.

Just 11 seconds later, Milwaukee added to their lead. Off of the ensuing faceoff, Brett Palin grabbed the puck and fed it to Mike Bartlett up the gut for a breakaway. Bartlett then beat Allen on the forehand for his seventh goal of the season, which came at 7:46 of the second period.

At the 10:41 mark, Peoria lost Mark Cundari for the rest of the game. Cundari put a hit on Linus Klasen sending him into the boards at an awkward angle. Cundari was given a 5-minute major and a game misconduct for the hit. Milwaukee failed to score on the extended power play.

The final tally of the game was the only goal scored in the third period. At 17:47 of the third, Derek Nesbitt redirected a shot out of the air from Derek Peltier, past Admirals' goaltender Mark Dekanich. It was the second goal in as many games for Nesbitt and his 17th of the season.

With just over a minute to play in regulation, Peoria pulled Allen for the extra attacker, but could not even the score.

Allen (20-14-4) stopped 28 of 30 shots in recording the loss while Dekanich turned aside 26 of the 27 shots he faced. Milwaukee ended the game 0-for-3 on the power play, while Peoria never received a power-play opportunity in the contest. It was just the second time this season that Peoria's opponent did not commit a penalty.
