Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, snapped a three-game losing streak by beating the Hershey Bears 3-1 at home Sunday in their last home game before six straight on the road, as well as a stretch in which they will play eight of ten games away from home. The win came in the second home game in as many nights on the heels of a calendar-year-ending stretch of seven road games in a row for the Sound Tigers.
After a scoreless first period, the Sound Tigers took the first lead at 1-0 on Kevin Colley's eighth goal of the season 2:44 into the middle frame with Blaine Down and Tomi Pettinen notching the assists. However, Hershey tied the game with a power-play goal by D.J. Smith, his seventh goal of the year, 6:13 later off assists from Brett Clark and Charlie Stephens.
The Sound Tigers regained the lead with 10:18 left in the game as Colley intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and fed Down who moved through the slot and beat Bears Goaltender Tom Lawson for his third goal of the season.
Hershey pulled Lawson in favor of an extra attacker at the 19:40 mark but could not tie the game. In fact, the Sound Tigers added an empty-net goal as Colley won a face-off in the offensive zone to set up Ben Guite's fourth goal of the year with 2.2 seconds left to play.
The Sound Tigers were 0 for 3 on the power play and outshot the Bears 30-24. Hershey was 1 for 3 on the advantage. Dieter Kochan made 23 saves for his 12th win of the season for the Sound Tigers while Lawson finished with 27 saves in a losing effort. Down was the first star of the game, Colley was the second, and Justin Mapletoft, who was reassigned to the Sound Tigers by the Islanders along with Derek Bekar just before the game, was the third.
The Sound Tigers will play the first two of the six consecutive road games when they visit the Norfolk Admirals next Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and next Sunday at 4 p.m. Both of next weekend's games will be web cast live at www.soundtigers.com with Saturday's game also airing on 600 WICC-AM.
