Manchester Monarchs News Release

MANCHESTER, NH – Right wing Pavel Rosa and center Steve Kelly each collected four points as the Monarchs snapped their two-game winless streak against the Lowell Lock Monsters with a 4-1 win on Sunday afternoon at the Verizon Wireless Arena. A capacity crowd of 9,916 fans roared loudly as the Monarchs ran up a three-goal cushion and never looked back. The win for the Monarchs (18-14-2-3, 41 points) was their second straight. They remain in third place in the Atlantic Division, one point behind the Providence Bruins for second place and four points behind the Hartford Wolf Pack for first place. The loss stretched the sixth place Lock Monsters (13-16-3-2, 31 points) record to 0-2-0-1 in their last three games.

The Monarchs efficiently grabbed control of the game early with three first period goals from Rosa. He had four of his team's seven shots in the period as the Monarchs took advantage of a sluggish Lock Monsters club that was appearing in its seventh game in nine days. Kelly assisted on all three goals, scored over 9:07 of clock time.

Rosa scored his first goal with a one-timer from the left circle at 9:51. Kelly fed Rosa for his 15th this season moments after working the puck out of the right corner. Two Lock Monster defenders bit as Kelly faked a pass to the blue line, leaving a clear path to goaltender Patrick DesRochers. Kelly next charged toward the net, faked a shot, and then dished to Rosa, who put the Monarchs up 1-0 with his slap shot. Left wing Brad Church also notched an assist on the play.

Rosa nicely played a carom off the end boards for his second goal of the game and 16th overall, scored on a wrap-around with the Monarchs on the power play at 17:59. Rosa took advantage of an open net as DesRochers overplayed defenseman Richard Seeley's blast from the right point. Rosa cleanly picked the puck off the boards and wheeled around the cage before slipping it inside the left post. Seeley and Kelly had the assists as the Monarchs stretched their lead to 2-0.

Rosa recorded his first hat trick as a Monarch just 59 seconds later, much to the delight of the seventh sellout crowd of the year, who littered the ice with hats. Rosa's third goal of the game and 17th overall this season was scored much like his first goal of the game, with a one-timed blast from the left circle. Defenseman Tomas Zizka and Kelly had the assists, with Zizka neatly offering the puck to Rosa after drawing the Lock Monsters defense to him in the slot.

After a scoreless second period, Rosa and Kelly each notched their fourth points of the game, sharing assists on Church's fifth goal with 5:02 remaining to make it 4-1. Kelly located Church cutting toward the net on the right wing and neatly fed him near the crease. Church slammed the pass by goaltender Brent Krahn, who entered the game at the start of the second period. The point was the 11th in 11 games for Church.

Right wing Pavel Brendl spoiled goaltender Adam Hauser's bid for a shutout with his 16th goal, scored high over the glove of the Monarchs netminder from the slot five minutes before Church's tally. Center Mike Zigomanis and defenseman Allan Rourke assisted.

Hauser finished with 25 saves and his eighth win. He's won both of his last two starts. DesRochers, who entered Sunday's action with a two-game winning streak against the Monarchs, took the loss, stopping just four of the seven shots he faced before being pulled.

The Monarchs, who are 4-3-0-1 in eight meetings with the Lock Monsters this season, continue their four-game homestand when they return to action against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, January 7. The Monarchs and the Penguins have never met before.
