Explosive Second leads Roadrunners to Victory

Toronto ON. - The Toronto Roadrunners scored four goals in three minutes and 33 seconds in the second period and held on to beat the Chicago Wolves 5-4 on Sunday at the Ricoh Coliseum.

Chicago scored two goals in the first period. On the Wolves first shot of the game, Karl Stewart recorded his fifth goal of the year from Eric Healey and Brian Swanson. Stewart also added 2 assists and was named the game's third star. Tommi Santala rounded out the scoring in the first period with his fifth of the year. Assists went to by Steve Maltais and Joe DiPenta.

The Roadrunners scored four goals in a span of 3 minutes and 33 seconds in the second period. Joe Cullen at 13:13, Chad Hinz at 15:43, Tony Salmelainen at 16:17, and Nate DiCasmirro at 16:46 scored goals for Toronto. Hinz's goal was his 100th career AHL point and was named the game's second star. Tony Salmelainen added an assist in the second and was named first star of the game. Marc-Andre Bergeron, Jani Rita, Jamie Wright, Igor Ulanov, and Chad Hinz added the helpers on the quick goals that chased Wolves goalie Kari Lehtonen from the net.

Half way through the third, back-up goaltender Frederic Cassivi was caught behind his own net and Dave Roche fed Sean McAslan for the game winner. Stephen Baby and Eric Healey scored goals for Chicago in the third but the Roadrunners held on for the win.

In goal, Roadrunners goaltender Stephen Valiquette earned his seventh win of the season with 22 saves on 26 shots. Wolves starter Kari Lehtonen made 14 saves on 18 shots before being pulled in favour of Frederic Cassivi (at 16:46 of the second period) who made 11 saves on 12 shots.

The Toronto Roadrunners return to action this Friday, January 9th, when they play against the St. John's Maple Leafs. The Roadrunners return home on Sunday January 25th when they play the Rochester Americans.
