Sonadores Defeat Emeralds 6-2 in Inaugural Night
June 29, 2019 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Hillsboro Hops News Release
On Friday night, the Hillsboro Hops transformed into the Soñadores de Hillsboro in celebration of the Latinx community.
They took on touted I-5 rival Eugene Emeralds as the Soñadores sent right-hander Deyni Olivero to the mound to oppose Yunior Perez of Eugene. It was a tale of two starts at Ron Tonkin Field, as Perez was chased after only recording two outs, walking three, surrendering two hits and three runs (all earned).
The Soñadores struck first on a bases loaded sacrifice fly by outfielder Kristian Robinson. It didn't stop there, as Jorge Barrosa took advantage of the two-on two-out situation by lacing a line drive to center field, driving in Eddie Hernandez and Andy Yerzy. While the offense was rolling, Olivero was dealing. He began the game with three straight three up-three down innings, silencing the Emerald's offense.
Hillsboro's attack continued in the bottom of the third inning, when newly acquired Arizona State Catcher Lyle Lin drove in Jesus Marriaga and Barossa on a single to centerfield. Daniel Wasinger was able to tack on the Hops' fifth run on a sacrifice fly to right.
Eugene tacked on a run in the top of the fourth and sixth to cut into the five run deficiet, but Jake Slaugher and Yonathan Perlaza's efforts to bring Eugene back into the game were thwarted by stellar relief by Justin Garcia and Bryan Menedez who threw a combined 2.1 innings, puched four tickets, and allowed one base runner.
The Soñadores were not done as Lin added his third RBI of the game, driving in Marriaga once again on a missle to center field.
Trouble was brewing in the ninth, but the birthday boy Jose Cuas came in to slam the door, sealing the victory on his 25th birthday.
The Hillsboro Hops are back in action against the Eugene Emeralds in game two of three on Saturday Night. First Pitch is at 7:07 pm and will be televised on Root Sports. Rip City Radio 620AM will begin their pregame show at 6:35pm.
