Ems Alums Alzolay, Amaya Named to MLB Futures Game
June 29, 2019 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Eugene Emeralds News Release
More Emeralds alumni are heading to the MLB Futures Game. Pitcher Adbert Alzolay and catcher Miguel Amaya will each suit up for the National League on July 7 in the MLB Futures Game in Cleveland, Ohio.
Alzolay and Amaya join a steady stream of Emeralds alums to have appeared in the MLB Futures Game in recent years, including Dylan Cease (2018), Eloy Jimenez (2016-17), Hunter Renfroe (2016), Trea Turner (2015) and Colin Rea (2015).
Alzolay spent the entire 2015 season in Eugene, posting a 6-2 record (12 appearances, 3 starts) with 2.04 ERA, 49 strikeouts and just 15 walks in 53.0 innings of work. Alzolay held NWL hitters to a .159 average during his time with the Ems.
Earlier this month, Adbert Alzolay made his MLB debut and has been sending waves through Major League baseball circles ever since. After making his MLB debut on June 20, Alzolay has gone 1-0 (2 appearances, 1 start) in 8.2 innings of work with 9 strikeouts. He is scheduled to make his next MLB start on Monday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Miguel Amaya spent the entire 2017 season with Eugene batting .228 with 4 HR and 26 RBI in 58 games. The highly-touted catcher is currently with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Single A-Advanced) playing for former Emeralds manager Steve Lerud.
The Futures Game, a staple of the MLB All-Star weekend for two decades, will see a new change in format this year. After the previous 20 years saw the Futures Game pit U.S. and World teams against one another, this year's iteration will see the Futures Game switch to American League against National League, just like the MLB All-Star Game.
You can watch the MLB Futures Game on July 7 on MLB Network.
The Emeralds will honor former Futures Game selection and current American League Rookie of the Year candidate Eloy Jimenez with a bobblehead giveaway on July 6.
