Lancaster Stormers News Release

The night after Mark Brackman stifled the Patriots on three hits, Paul Phillips and two relievers got back at the Barnstormers on a four-hit shutout as Somerset cruised to a 6-0 win in the series finale at TD Bank Park.

Despite the loss, Lancaster maintained a 3 1/2 game lead in the Freedom Division.

Phillips (5-2) checked the Barnstormers on two pairs of back-to-back singles while walking two and striking out five. The Patriots used Mike Solbach and Josh Rupe for an inning apiece to close out the night.

Brad Boyer and Tommy Everidge opened the fourth with consecutive line drive hits to left, but Phillips coaxed a 5-4-3 double play out of Terry Tiffee and struck out Jesus Merchan on a check swing to close the inning.

The other two Lancaster hits came in the seventh. With one out, Tiffee cranked a wicked liner into the right field corner. Johnny Drennen played the carom off the wall perfectly and gunned down Tiffee at second base. Merchan followed with a grounder inside the bag at first, and he, too, fell victim to a Drennen toss to second.

John Halama (4-3), coming off seven shutout innings against Sugar Land on Saturday, walked the bases loaded in the bottom of the second after Emerson Frostad overran a foul pop up by Aaron Mathews in the middle of the second walk. Drennen made the left-hander pay dearly with a triple down the right field line, giving the Patriots a 3-0 lead. Joe Holden, making his first Atlantic League start in 2012, singled to left center, providing Phillips with a four-run cushion.

Yusuf Carter delivered the final blow, a two-run homer to left center in the bottom of the fourth.

Lancaster heads to Bridgeport to open a three-game weekend series against the Bluefish. The Barnstormers will send right-hander J.D. Durbin (1-3) to the mound on Friday evening against righty Tobi Stoner (1-5). The contest will be broadcast on 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com and the I Heart Radio app, beginning at 6:45.

NOTES: The loss ended a six-game Barnstormers winning streak over Somerset...The two teams do not meet again until August...The Lancaster bullpen allowed only one baserunner, a leadoff triple by Holden in the seventh, in three innings, two nights after four perfect innings by the relief corps...The four hits tied a season low the night after the club tied a season high with 16.
