Somerset Patriots News Release
Manchester, New Hampshire - The Somerset Patriots (5-2) at one point had erased their largest deficit of the season, but ultimately fell short to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (2-5) Tuesday night in a 6-5 loss to begin their longest road trip of the season.
The Fisher Cats had one of the top Toronto Blue Jays prospects, RHP Simeon Woods-Richardson (1-0) on the mound Tuesday night. Woods-Richardson, who had struck out eight batters over four innings in his first start of the year, struck out eight batters over five innings of one-run baseball this time out against Somerset.
New Hampshire struck first with a Gabriel Moreno (1) two-run home run off Somerset starting pitcher Shawn Semple (0-1). The Fisher Cats added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a Moreno two-run single and a run-scoring wild pitch.
The first Patriots run came on a solo home run from Thomas Milone (2) to lead off the top of the fifth inning, cutting Somerset's deficit to 5-1. They scratched an unearned run together in the top of the seventh inning before putting three runs on the board to tie it in the eighth.
Oswaldo Cabrera and Hoy Park began the eighth with back-to-back base hits before Donny Sands lined a two-run double down the right-field line. Sands later scored on a pair of wild pitches to even the score at 5-5.
New Hampshire bounced back, with Moreno drawing a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn a 6-5 win.
Moreno finished the evening 2-for-4 with a home run and five RBI.
Curtis Taylor (1-1) tossed a scoreless ninth inning to earn the win. Greg Weissert (1-1) took the loss despite striking out five batters.
The Patriots continue their six-game series in New Hampshire Wednesday night. Southpaw Matt Krook (0-0, 6.75 ERA) takes the mound for Somerset against Fisher Cats righty Elvis Luciano (0-0, 6.25 ERA). First pitch at Delta Dental Stadium is set for 6:35 p.m.
