Somerset Patriots News Release
Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots have announced the signing of Major League left-handed pitcher Rudy Owens.
Owens enters his first season with the Somerset Patriots and first in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. The southpaw has made one start at the Major League level with the Houston Astros in 2014. He worked 5.2 innings in a start against Seattle Mariners All-Star Felix Hernandez. Earlier that season, Owens went 8-5 over 25 appearances (21 starts) for Triple-A Oklahoma City.
The Mesa, Arizona native split time between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies organizations last year, including 15 appearances (10 starts) spread over the Triple-A level between Oklahoma City (Dodgers) and Albuquerque (Rockies).
Owens's best season came in 2009 with the West Virginia Power, where the lefty earned South Atlantic League Most Outstanding Pitcher honors after he posted a 10-1 record with a 1.70 ERA over 19 starts.
The Chandler Gilbert Community College alumnus has played at Triple-A for the majority of the last four seasons, and owns a 29-28 record at that level. Overall, Owens is 56-48 with a 3.72 ERA over 168 appearances (154 starts) in his nine-year minor league career.
Owens is expected to be activated during Somerset's next home stand.
